02 STATEMENT OF INTENT

Brief 3: magazine and online 

How do you intend to use the four areas of the media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief? ( approx. 400 words)

Statement of intent - Magazine

My brief is to produce the front covers and contents page(s) of the first 2 editions of a new music magazine that is being published by an independent publisher and two pages for the working website for the magazine. Unveiled magazine will target an audience of primarily 16-25 year old middle market audience that likes to be entertained. My research targets more modern, young magazines that would appeal to this age group, whilst also researching traditional codes and conventions for music magazines. Most music magazines that target 16-25 year olds use representations of males and females on the cover (using funky, modern and different lighting), short and sensationalist sell lines, direct mode of address, vivid and 'in your face' colour scheme and cover lines that discuss current music news, opinions, genres, how to become the next best artists and trends in the industry. To engage my targeted demographic, I will use models of this age and different social groups to connote inclusivity and reflect the different areas and ideologies within the industry. I will use genre convention of a bright colour scheme across my magazine covers and contents pages as it will more likely appeal a younger audience of 16-25 year olds. Mis en scene across both my covers and contents pages will be similar in order to establish a clear sense of branding and allow new readers to easily get to know the magazine. Both my covers will include a wide range of bright colours, costumes (glittery dress), articles, social groups and photos which will make the mis en scene different. 

Statement of intent - Website

The same house style will be sustained through a strong sense of branding onto the magazine website. The vivid colour scheme with a dark background or contrastingly a bright background will dominate the page design. I found that the websites included the masthead on the top left or middle which I will include because it will reinforce brand identity and also include the strap line that will be underneath both mastheads on both covers: the Unveiled logo and the strap line 'the ultimate new music magazine'. Advertisements will be placed throughout the page which will be suitable to 16-25 year olds demographic like a chance for emerging artists to win a set at a big festival, current music news about who has been nominated as artist of the month and fact files regarding emerging artists; all of which I have found in my research or I have liked the idea of. The audio-visual element will be in the form of a fun interview with an up and coming artist explaining her dreams as a child and challenges she had to overcome. From my research I have found the magazines in addition to their feature article include an audio visual element that is often a Q&A, games or a would you rather video. I would like to do my audio visual video outside in the setting that would have been similar to where/ how the artist grew up to help reinforce the ideas of how they grew up. Unveiled’s social media accounts will be advertised at the top and bottom of the website to attract and satisfy expectations of the younger audience who are the main modern day media consumers with the 16-25 year olds being the biggest social media consumers.  

How do you intend to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production? (approx. 100 words) 


To encourage my audience to refer to my magazines website after reading the magazine, I will use sublines on both the front cover and within the contents page telling readers to go to the website for different articles and exclusive content. To make the products digitally convergent, each issue edition will include a scannable QR code on the covers that link directly to the website. From my research of similar magazines, advertisements of the subscriptions to the magazines are on every page of the website so I will include a pop up advertisement of the magazine subscription and both the editions will be advertised for sale, as well as a subscription offer at the bottom of the home page and linked page.

You work for an independent media production company that have just been purchased by a news conglomerate. You specialise in webpage design and have been tasked with producing the homepage for a new newspaper aimed at a target audience of 16 to 25 years olds, with diverse interests including: celebrity, sports, lifestyle, the arts and politics.  

Your homepage must contain at least 5 original images and a short audio-visual piece. In addition, you should include representations of at least two different social groups. All posts must be displayed appropriately on your blog.
